History

William Withers & Co and Paul Steele Chartered Accountants merged in 2024 to become Withers Steele. Between us we have been advising and supporting our clients for more than 30 years. We are a progressive boutique practice, trusted by our clients to look after their affairs, and maintaining that trust is paramount to us.  We therefore tailor our services to be completely client focused.

Directors

Peter Lewis-Bending

Peter is a Chartered Accountant and a trusted advisor to his clients, providing strategic advice and support to owners of small and medium sized businesses.

Peter predominately looks after our corporate clients and is relied upon for his proactive tax and remuneration planning, while also advising on more complex tax matters and corporate finance.

Peter Withers

Pete joined the practice in 2006 working for William whilst training before progressing to become a Director of the firm in 2015. Pete specialises in Sole Trader and Partnerships with a keen interest in farming and rural business helping ensure that local businesses get the support they need to drive their business forward.

Pete grew up on a farm working with William rearing beef and sheep, and has recently moved on to keeping horses, lambs and chickens with his wife and two boys.

William Withers

William heads our agricultural services. He is the son of a North Somerset farmer and attended the University of Nottingham, doing a degree in Agricultural Science.

Following various jobs in agriculture, including agricultural botanist, lecturer, and farmer, William qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1996 and later became a fellow.

William started William Withers & Co the same year he qualified and over that time the business has grown into Withers Steele, with a wide range of clients.

Paul Steele

Paul qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1983 and started his own practice in 1989. He specialises in company accounts and taxation, personal tax for high wealth individuals and is a licenced probate practitioner.

Managers

Natalie Lee

Natalie started her career in accountancy in 1997 with Paul Steele Chartered Accountants and progressed to a Fellow Member of The Association of Accounting Technicians in 2012.

Natalie has a wide range of experience within the accountancy practice and is trusted by her clients to provide an efficient, reliable and accurate service.

She was born and raised in Tiverton and still lives there with her family, cats and chickens.

Jo Smalley

Jo joined Paul Steele Chartered Accountants in 1992 and is a Fellow Member of The Association of Accounting Technicians.

Jo prides herself in providing a professional and reliable service to a wide range of clients across the practice.

She has lived in Tiverton all her life and enjoys time with her family and springer spaniel.

Kate Langford

Kate qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 2020 having previously worked in agriculture; in cereal field trials, customer service within the agrochemical industry and as a BASIS qualified agronomist in North Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. 

Kate now lives in the Blackdown Hills on her husband’s family sheep farm. She joined us in 2022 working alongside William in the agricultural team.

Amy Lee

Amy qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2016, and has recently joined us, following a 9 year career at a large regional accountancy firm, within a team specialising in agriculture.

Amy has a particular interest in agricultural businesses and enjoys helping farming families of all shapes, sizes, and sectors, plan for their long-term future, providing both commercial, business, and strategic tax advice.

Outside of work, Amy has recently moved with her husband and children to a small holding and has started their own herd of pedigree Red Ruby Devons.

Key staff

Sandy Drew

Sandy is the payroll lead for the practice and looks after a large portfolio of payroll clients. She is AAT Level 4 qualified and in 2022 gained her Payroll Technician qualification from The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP). She holds membership with both bodies. 

Sandy joined the practice in 2015 following many years working for a group of dental practices – starting as a qualified dental nurse before progressing on to become the group accounts and payroll manager.

Outside of work, Sandy likes to spend time with her family, going on holiday and is a member of Heathcoat Cricket Club, having served on the committee for many years in various roles.
